“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
Addie Lue “Hodges” Butler was born on September 26, 1938, to the late Thomas and Hattie Hodges in Metter, Georgia. In her early years, she attended school in the Bulloch County school system before her family relocated to Brunswick, Georgia.
Addie was a proud graduate of the Risley High School Class of 1957. Known to many for her genuine heart and graceful presence, she stepped into adulthood with a strong work ethic and compassionate spirit. She was employed for many years at the Holiday Inn on Jekyll Island, where she left a lasting impression on both coworkers and guests. Later, she worked at Publix Supermarket, retiring in 2005. Even after retirement, former coworkers and patrons often visited and spoke highly of her impact, warmth, and kindness.
In 1957, Addie married the late Mr. John Butler, Sr. Through this union, they raised six children, John Davis Butler, Jr., Arlene Yvonne Sapp (Michael), Anthony Bernard Butler, Gerald Thomas Butler, Adrian Catina Lewis (Gary), all of Brunswick, Georgia, and Dwaine Antonio Butler of Atlanta, Georgia. A devoted woman of God, Addie instilled in her children and family the principles of love, faith, generosity, and service. She was a longtime member of Greater Bethel AME Church, where her love for God and people radiated through her service. She served as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Trustee and Steward boards, and was honored as a Mother of the Church. Her spiritual leadership extended beyond the sanctuary, reaching deeply throughout the Arco community.
Addie’s kindness and wisdom touched everyone she encountered. She was known for offering comforting words and encouragement—always lifting others with her quiet strength and unwavering positivity. Her life was a true reflection of her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” These weren’t just words—this was how she lived her life, continuously inspiring others through her faith.
She had a deep love for sports, especially Georgia Bulldogs football, tennis, and her favorite player, Stephen Curry. Family gatherings were often centered around her home, where her radiant energy and joyful presence brought everyone together. Her gentle spirit, wise counsel, and quiet strength made all who knew her feel deeply loved and valued.
Addie was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Tyrone Butler; great-grandson, Tremaine Thomas Butler; father, Thomas Hodges; mother, Hattie Hodges; and siblings, Juanita Williams, Wilma Hodges, James Hodges, Eli Hodges, Daniel Hodges, Ollie Mae Mercer, George Hodges, Eunice Hodges, Bernice Hodges, Mary Polite, and Gentle Hodges.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith carried on by her brother, Lenton (Shirley) Parker; beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and an immense circle of friends who cherished her until the Lord called her home.
