Alonzo Griffin Obituary

If anybody asks you where I have gone to, tell them that I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me. I’m on a boat headed out to sea, and my Master sent the angels to guide me to my final resting place. I’ve gone to a place where every day is a day to fish. Don’t worry, or feel sad for me, I’m fishing with the Master of the sea.

Days on the river are long and tiresome, but on September 4, 1958, which was a windy day in Brunswick, Georgia, God blessed the late Alonza Griffin, Sr., and Inez Griffin with an amazing and witty son whom they named Alonzo Griffin, Jr. At a young age, Alonzo, affectionately known as “Duke,” relocated to Key West, Florida, where he developed a deep love for the sea and became a dedicated fisherman.

Alonzo knew no other life than the life of a fisherman. Life on the water helped to mold him into the person he became in life. He had a heart of gold and a patient soul. He loved his family and friends and always spoke about the importance of showing love to family.

No man knows the hour or minute that will be their last earthly sail on the sea of life. God sent his Angels to reclaim his gift to this world on April 6, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonza (Ramona) Griffin, Sr., and Inez Griffin; and brothers, Tommy James Taylor and Alex Towns.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved children, Brittny Griffin of Woodbine, GA, Whitny Griffin of Austin, TX, Demetrius (Jessica) Thomas of Brunswick, GA, Lashay Mendez of Houston, TX, Eli King of Brunswick, GA, DJ Riley of Brunswick, GA, and Chris Evans of Brunswick, GA; grandchildren, Nevaeh Hall and Demetria Thomas; four brothers, Johnny (Gloria) Leggett, Robert (Connie) Towns, Sr., Anthony (Laquisha) Griffin, and Michael Griffin, all of Brunswick, GA; three sisters, Gloria Howard of Brunswick, GA, Cynthia (Andre) Taylor of Carteret, NJ, and Falana Griffin of Brunswick, GA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Alonzo will be remembered for his love of the sea, hardworking spirit, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him.
