Assistant Pastor Edna Shiggs Moore Obituary

“To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven” Eccl. 3:1

A Time To Be Planted

On January 8, 1948, Deacon Jesse Shiggs and Mother Rebecca F. Shiggs were blessed with their seventh child, a beautiful baby girl. Edna made her grand entrance into the world and, from her birth until her demise, she lived out the true meaning of her name. The name Edna is of Hebrew origin and means “delight”, “rejuvenation” and “renewer”.  All who knew Edna Mae can attest to the fact that she was a delight to be around, and she had a way of rejuvenating, and renewing the spirit of others around her.  Her parents raised her to be a strong, independent person and taught her the value of enduring, being courageous, and resourceful.

A Time To Be Watered

Edna attended the public schools of Hampton County School District #2 and graduated from Estill Training School in 1966.  While in school, she was a valuable member of the basketball team.  The team members looked to her for guidance on and off the court.  After high school, she went to work at Falcon Industries for many years.  She proved to be a skilled, dedicated worker who worked diligently and relentlessly until she retired.  Because of her natural leadership skills, others often came to her seeking advice.

A Time For Increase

Proverbs 31:10 says, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Joe Moore was blessed with a virtuous woman in the person of Edna Mae. They were married in July   of 1966.  Everyone who knew Edna knew that Joe was the “Love of Her Life”.  Their union stood the test of time for over fifty-seven years. Psalms 127:3 says that children are a heritage from the Lord and the fruit of the womb is His reward.  The Lord blessed Edna and Joe with three beautiful biological children, Boniva Sebastian Moore, Sandra Renee Moore, and Joe Anthony Moore, along with their grandchild reared in their home, Kameshia Moore Jones.

Indeed, Edna was a rare jewel, precious and hard to find. Even though she was working a full-time job, she did whatever was necessary to take care of her father during his extended illnesses. Edna Mae internalized and epitomized the saying, “Your people shall be my people and your God shall be my God”.   She became a caregiver for her father-in-law and mother-in-law as their health declined.  She treated them like her own parents and made whatever sacrifices she had to so she could provide them with as much comfort as possible during their extended illnesses.  Her mother-in-law often remarked that “she didn’t believe a biological daughter could have treated her any better than Edna Mae did“.

Although, she was an elegant and exquisite woman, she enjoyed the simple things in life such as preparing delicious meals, keeping her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and supporting them by attending their extracurricular activities.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apple of her eye.  She loved them unconditionally and they loved her equally.

A Time To Be Exalted

In 1972, Edna Mae was saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost under the leadership of the late Bishop Stephen Frazier. She joined Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church of Christ, Incorporated, and quickly went to work in the Lord’s church. Whatever her hands found to do, she did it with all her might as unto the Lord. She started as a Deaconess.  Later, she became a Sunday School Teacher. As she kept working for the Lord, her gifts made room for her, and the Lord continued to elevate her.  Teacher Edna Moore served as The Church Secretary, Ward Two Leader, Altar Worker, President of the Women’s Convention, Pastor, and Assistant Pastor.

She also served as a Choir Member/Leader and loved to sing.  Her singing was not merely a harmonious flow of words, but soul-stirring and anointed singing that broke chains and destroyed yokes. Some of her favorite songs were: 1) I Come Over Here To Stay Lord, 2) I Made A Vow to The Lord, 3) Hold On Saints Just A Little While Longer, 4) I Got A Feeling Everything Is Going To Be Alright, 5) I Know Prayer Changes Things, and 6) God Specializes.   Teacher Moore always took her duties seriously and reminded others that we ought to give all that we have when we are working in the Lord’s vineyard. She often encouraged the saints to, “Keep the Focus” and to “Keep Their Foot In The Rock”.  At her demise, she was serving as Assistant Pastor of the Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church of Christ under the leadership of Apostle Dublin Johnson, Jr.

A Time To Pluck Up

Two verses come to mind as we reflect on the life of Teacher Moore.  Philippians 1:21, “For me to live is Christ, to die is gain” and 2 Corinthians 5:8 “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. Edna’s life on earth was a reflection of Christ and she helped lead many to Christ.  However, in death, she has reached the pinnacle of success which is to hear the sweet voice of the Lord say, “WELCOME HOME”.  It was during the early hours on November 21, 2023, that Teacher Edna Mae Moore heard the voice of the Lord bidding her to come home. She had been firmly planted in the faith and now it was time for her to be rewarded.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Deacon Jesse and Mother Rebecca F. Shiggs; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elder Wilbur and Mother Rebecca Moore; brothers, Jesse and Nathaniel Shiggs; sister, Laura Shiggs; brother-in-law, Jacob Gallman, and sister-in-law, Thelma Shiggs.

Left to cherish her memories and await the coming of Christ are her husband, Joe Moore of the home; sons, Boniva Moore of Fayetteville, NC; Joe Anthony (Patricia) Moore of Estill, SC; daughters, Sandra Moore of Gaston, SC, and Kameshia (Jimmy) Jones of Estill, SC; grands, Shaneka Brooks of Greensboro, NC  and Devon Moore of Jacksonville, Fl; great-grands, Jayden Bostick, Jaida and Jocelyn Jones of Estill, SC; Vaughnie and Jacyon Moore of Jacksonville, Fl; sisters, Grace S.
