Betty J. Howard, born Betty Jean Surrency on September 1, 1949, in Brunswick, Georgia, was the beloved daughter of the late Nancy Bowens Surrency and Simpkin Surrency. Raised by her devoted mother, Betty spent her early years surrounded by the love of family, friends, and community. She delighted in simple joys—attending local softball games and hayrides—and those moments of laughter and togetherness shaped her gentle, caring spirit.
A proud graduate of Risley High School, Class of 1968, Betty left Brunswick as a young woman to explore new horizons in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1973, she relocated to California where she was employed by General Electric in Fresno, demonstrating her strong work ethic and dedication to excellence.
In 1981, Betty returned home to Brunswick, where she reconnected with her roots and soon after met the love of her life, Mr. Joe M. Howard, in 1982. From that moment forward, the two were inseparable—true partners in faith, love, and life. Over the years, Betty continued her life of service and care, working in retail as a cashier, providing in-home caregiving, and offering her talents to the Sea Island Company, where her kindness and diligence touched many.
Betty accepted Christ at an early age at First Jordan Grove Baptist Church and later became a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. There she served joyfully as Kitchen Manager and as a member of the choir until her health began to fail. Her life was a reflection of her guiding motto: “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”
Betty’s hands were rarely still. She poured love into everything she created—crocheting Afghans, scarves, and hats, and crafting macramé hanging planters as heartfelt gifts for family and friends. A gifted cook and baker, she was well known for her famous “Sock It to Me” Cake, which became a favorite at every gathering. A true family woman, Betty cherished time with her loved ones, especially her great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. She was a passionate football fan and loved cheering for her favorite team right beside her husband.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Nancy Bowens Surrency and Simpkin Surrency; brothers, William Bowens, Jimmy Bowens, Leroy Bowens, and David Crittendon; and beloved granddaughter, Shamika Mangram.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her devoted husband, Joe M. Howard; loving daughters, Delcina Mangram (Jerry) and Zalika Howard; adored great-grandchildren, JiQuan Brantley and Ji’Anna Mangram; and a host of cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, extended family, and dear friends.
Betty Howard was a courageous warrior, devoted wife, and faithful servant of God. Her warmth, laughter, and kindness touched every life she encountered. Though she is no longer with us in body, her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
