Every gift that comes from God has purpose, beauty, and love to share with the world. On February 14, 1950, in Brunswick, Georgia, God gave Gertrude Thigpen and Frank Singleton, Sr., an amazing, gifted individual that they named Brenda Elizabeth Singleton. Her family and friends knew that she was special because from childhood to death, she was an amazing storyteller who loved to entertain friends and family with her animated accounts of events. Her intelligence, caring nature, and undeniable sense of humor made all that knew her, love her.
Brenda received her primary and secondary education from the Glynn County school system and graduated from Risley High School in 1968. Some called her Strawberry and although we cannot say how the nickname originated, we can only assume it was because of the sweetness of her aura. Brenda was extremely active in extra-curricular activities during her formative years. She was a point guard on the basketball team and probably the feistiest 5-foot woman you will ever meet. She enjoyed performing as a majorette in the school’s marching band and took pride in every stride. The respected and well-loved young lady was a fine representative of her school and community and during her senior year of high school, her peers voted her as the Risley High School Homecoming Queen.
After graduation, she took a few classes at Brunswick College (now College of Coastal Georgia). Brenda had a unique voice that she would eventually use on the radio airways as a radio announcer on WGIG. In 1976, she delivered a beautiful baby girl. Later, Brenda joined the Southern Bell Telephone Company (not AT&T) as a customer service representative and eventually moved to Atlanta, Georgia, with her infant daughter. She worked there for over thirteen years until technology caused a major shift in the company. Following her departure from the phone company, she worked in the restaurant industry on and off. Brenda loved to sew, and it was not uncommon for her to sew matching outfits for herself and her daughter-this was sure to start a conversation.
Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Frank Singleton, Sr.; mother, Gertrude Thigpen; stepfather, Gilbert Thigpen, all of Brunswick, GA; and sister, Dorothy Singleton of Decatur, GA.
She leaves to cherish fond memories of her life: daughter, LaToya (Rodric) Golden of Lawrenceville, GA; grandsons, Thai A. Golden and Anderson P. Golden; sister, Gloria (Anthony) Smith
of Glennville, GA; and a host of other family and friends.
