Obituary

To all those that I leave behind, my life should be viewed like the sunset and an evening star. I want there to be no long periods of mourning when my earthly days come to an end. I want you all to celebrate my ninety-five beautiful years of life. May you always remember the times we’ve shared and the memories that we’ve made. May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and your minds through this difficult time in your lives.

Mother Carrie L. Gordon was born in Hampton County, South Carolina, on February 5, 1927, the youngest of two daughters born to her parents, the late Frank Clarke and the late Edna Green Clarke. Carrie began her education in the public school system of Hampton County, South Carolina. She was baptized at an early age at Sweetrose Baptist Church, Estill, South Carolina, under the leadership of Rev. Joseph O’Banner and Deacon Josh McGraw. In later years, she moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where she completed her education. There, she met and married Mr. Alfred Taylor Rhone in 1942; to this union, three children, Marjorie, Ida Jean, and Jackie, were born. Mr. Rhone preceded her in death.

After returning to Estill, South Carolina, she later met and married Mr. Sumpter Gordon, Sr., in 1953; to this union, three more children, Edna, Mary, and Sumpter, Jr., were born. Mr. Sumpter Gordon, Sr., and daughters, Edna and Mary, preceded her in death. Mother Carrie later moved to Miami, Florida, where she became a faithful servant of the Greater Israel Bethel Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. P. D. Brantley.

Mother Carrie lived a full life, but God saw she was tired and the hills were too hard to climb. He gently closed her eyes on April 8, 2022, in Miami, Florida.

She will always be remembered by her family and friends, and she will be dearly missed by all. Mother Gordon leaves to cherish fond memories: son, Mr. Sumpter Gordon, Jr.; daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Harrison, Ms. Ida Jean Rhone, and Ms. Jackie Daniels; son-in-law, Eugene Mellerson; a special cousin, Mrs. Deloris Butler; ten grandchildren (including two grandchildren, she raised), Shakita Gordon and Sabrina Gordon; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and church family.Due to the current state of (COVID-19) pandemic and in order to promote social distancing, anyone entering the funeral home for viewing; as well as attending all graveside or funeral service, either inside or outside, must wear a mask. We will also limit the number of persons allowed to enter the funeral home or any other facility at any given period during the viewing process.  We ask that you leave the premise upon exiting the building. The family is most appreciative to each of you for all acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time in their lives.
