Obituary of Mother Catherine Drummond Lattany
Arrived into her earthly home September 5, 1928
Departed into her Heavenly home December 13, 2024
On Friday December 13, 2024, at about 7:00 AM, this beautiful "Woman of God" slept peacefully into the arms of our "Holy God". “Mother Catherine” as she was affectionally and respectfully called, lived 96 wonderful years. We will miss her earthly presence for the rest of our life but look forward to seeing her again in God's appointed time. Her love was so special and spiritual. She touched the lives of so many people just being, Mama, Mother Catherine, Grandma, Aunt Catherine, Sister Lattany and so many other names of respect and endearment.
Catherine was born on Wednesday September 5, 1928, into the loving home of Laurie Drummond, Sr. and Edith Smith Drummond. She became the fifth of nine children born in the Drummond Household. Laurie Drummond, Jr., Retha Mae, Adeline, and Joseph also welcomed the new Princess into the family fold. She was later joined by four other siblings, Essie, Ella Louise, Ainsley and Lou Berta. Born to Laurie, Sr. before his marriage to Edith, was another daughter, Dorothy Brown, who Catherine loved just like she did all of her siblings.
On Saturday, June 26th, 1948, she married Mr. Charles Allen Lattany, Jr. To this union, seven children were born. The children, Arthur James, Oliver Lee, Jacqueline Marie, Gregory Lamont, Lester Donell, Melvin Bernard and Charles Allen, Jr. grew up with love and toughness from both Charles, Jr. and Catherine, who they were only allowed to call Mama and Daddy. The children all later beginning lovingly and respectfully calling them Mr. C and Mrs. C. and later in life, “The Queen. These changes were certainly with the permission of their parents.
Catherine’s early education was in the Camden County School system. After all of the children graduated from High School and other educational pursuits, Catherine decided to pursue her own educational goals. She enrolled in Night School, completed her high school education along with many in her graduating class and was the Class Valedictorian. Her greatest educational desire was to be a nurse. An aneurism of the brain ended that pursuit, but she taught more nurses what loving care was about than she could have learned in any educational facility. Those nurses still express their gratitude.
Catherine was a very active and hard-working homemaker and housekeeper. An excellent cook, she worked for many well-known families in the Brunswick and Glynn County area. She was fondly called Mrs. Catherine by them all. She was an active member of Philadelphia Women’s Ministry, Roosevelt Harris Center Bible Study Group, and Seldom Park Senior Ministry Luncheon Bible Study Group. She was an active member of the First Friendship Baptist Church of Brunswick for almost 70 years.
Mrs. Catherine D. Lattany, who was recognized on May 15, 2022, at 93 years old as the oldest member and longest tenured member of the First Friendship Baptist Church of Brunswick, GA., as a child of God, Mother of the Church, Deaconess, Usher, Missionary, Sunday School Teacher, Lay Speaker and Christian example to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends. She became a member of First Friendship in 1955 at the age of 26. She has served under the leadership of 7 Pastors. Rev.'s Harris, Allen, Boles, Burgess, Williams, Willson and now Rev. Steven A. Wise. Mom accepted Christ at the age of 16 years old and was baptized by the late Rev. Mizell at the Enterprise Baptist Church in Woodbine, Ga. Rev.
