As you celebrate the end of my life’s pilgrimage on earth, I pray that each of you will find comfort in knowing that a loving and compassionate God knows what’s best for each of us. I’ve lived an exciting and full life. We've shared so many memories, countless hours of laughter and so much love, so keep these memories within each of your heart and minds. Use them to comfort the pain when your start to miss my presence. Don’t forget all the laughter we shared, which was like the roaring thunder on a rainy day. Life has a joyful beginning but sometimes it can be a painful ending for those loved ones, we leave behind. I don’t want my exit from this life to be painful for any of my family and friends, so begin each day with my contagious smile. The joy that I brought to this world began on March 30, 1924 in Glynn County, Brunswick, Georgia when I was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Grant, Sr. She was the second born in a family of twelve children. Clara was reared and educated in the local public schools. She graduated from Risley High School in 1941. After high school, she attended Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for nursing. Later in life, she attended Savanna State College in Savannah, Georgia. She pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc in 1955 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1956.
Clara’s certification in teaching took her to three states: Georgia, Florida, and California, where she taught at various schools. After her retirement from the Public School System, she was instrumental in setting up and working with Brunswick Job Corp for many years before officially retiring.
She was a lifelong member of St. Athanasius’ Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry Board and other committees. She was very well liked and respected in the community. She loved to travel and enjoyed laughing and having a good time with family and friends, especially with her grandchildren. She was a loving, caring, and devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, auntie, cousin, and friend.
Clara leaves to mourn and carry on her legacy: daughters, Yvonne L. Ryals and Theresa Lewis Scott; grandchildren, Valerie Ryals, Lisa Lewis, Dyonna Lewis, Nicole Lewis, Roderick Lewis, and Chris Lewis; great grandchildren, Herbert A. Dennis, Ty’lesha Jackson, Roderick Lewis, Jr., Jade Lewis and Jarod Lewis; amazing great- great grandchildren, Hunter Ace Dennis, Lavonne Green, and Averi Lewis; sisters, Theresa Atkinson and Rosemary Heilig; brothers, Robert Grant and William Grant; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
