Colleen Kelly Obituary

The life of Colleen Monica Kelly, “AKA Collard Greens” began on September 9,1958 when the late Lillian Solomon and Curly Kelly received a bundle of joy in Savannah, Georgia at Memorial Hospital. At the age of eight years old, Colleen moved to New York with both of her parents, and four siblings. The family resided in Harlem, where she began her city life. Colleen started her education in Harlem at C.S.194.  After completion of her years there, she attended J.H.S 82 in the Bronx, where she joined New Voices of Freedom with her youngest brother Conrad.  From there, she went to John F Kennedy High School and graduated in 1977. She went on to attend Borough of Manhattan Community College and attended Wilfred Academy in the mid-80s.

She began her career as a hair stylist at her neighborhood barbershop, Rosie, where she was embraced by her community and left a memorable impression of those; who worked there and her clients. Colleen continued to sing with New Voices of Freedom and even had the chance to sing with the super group, which led her group to sing in the U2 movie “Rattle and Hum”.

Later, Colleen was employed at Schervier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for some time before she became pregnant with her first-born child (Colleis). A few years later, she met a fashion designer Massata Thioune, who she married. From that union, her two kids, Cheikh and Fama were born. Not long after she had Cheikh; she moved to Florida, where she had her youngest daughter, Fama.  Her faith grew while attending, “ The House of Refuge Ministries”.

No matter how dark the moment was, she smiled and laughed through it all. She gave God the glory every day and now she is laying in the arms of the most high. Colleen was the person who cheered you up when you were down, and the woman who would pray for you without you knowing. If you were lucky enough to cross paths with her, consider yourself blessed. She never forgot you and always remembered your name.  She definitely made her mark here on earth and will never be forgotten. Colleen lived within her dash. She lived in merriment and marched to the beat of her own drum.

Her smile was as bright as the stars in the sky, her laugh was like the beautiful sound of ocean water, her style was graceful, she moved with the wind, she made sure she looked good, and her hair was always done. Most of all was her earthly soul, she lit up every room, and she had a heart that was more than 24karat gold.

On July 22, 2021, God decided that Colleen’s work on earth was done.  Now, she joins other family members who have gone on before her to be with the Lord, which includes her parents, her oldest sister, Mae, and younger brother, Conrad.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories:  3 children, Colleis, Cheikh (Cassie), Fama all of Florida; siblings, Jerome (PA) & Aisha (Lee) (GA), Charlestta “Red” Thomas (NY) ; 4 grandchildren, Jermih, Cherish, Jamell & Charming; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She will be missed for sure, but never forgotten. If she were here, she’d tell you “I love you, and there ain’t nothing you can do about it!” Forever may she live.
