On May 20, 1939, in Hampton County, South Carolina, God gave Willie and Clarisa Gordon a beautiful and perfect angel that they named “Curlene”. He created an individual who symbolized the Fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, generosity, peace, and faithfulness. She added so much beauty to God’s world and to her family.
At an early age, Curlene became a member of Second Thankful Baptist Church in Pineland, South Carolina, where she served faithfully until her health began to fail. She loved going to church and fellowshipping with her church family. Curlene was joined in holy matrimony to the late Sammie Lee Frazier, and from this union, God blessed them with three children. After graduating from Estill Training School in 1957, where she was the “best forward basketball player” on the team, she relocated to New York City in 1958. Curlene’s early years of employment began in the public schools of New York City as a teacher’s aide. In 1982, she returned to Estill, South Carolina, and became a bus driver and teacher’s aide for Hampton District #2. Curlene loved working with children; her life and service was purpose-driven and a testament of God’s divine guidance. She retired in 2009 after working for over 30 years. After retirement, Curlene enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Curlene had a passion for cooking, shopping, and basketball. She loved cheering at the basketball games that her grandchildren played at. She was always joyful and looked forward to family gatherings and especially the family reunion. Her kind demeanor and spirit drew you to her, where she made you laugh as she talked about her family, local and national news, and sports.
Curlene has finished her journey. A life exemplified by her faith, her love for her family and friends, and a commitment to God’s most precious gift, children. She transitioned from this life peacefully on January 15, 2023, at the age of 83 after a brief illness surrounded by her family. Curlene was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Clarisa Gordon; husband, Sammie Lee Frazier; brother, John Henry Gordon; sister, Rosa Jane Funches; daughter-in-law, Betty Frazier; two grandsons, Antonio Holmes and Samquan Frazier; granddaughter, Dyanna Frazier; and great-granddaughter, Sha’niya Frazier.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her devoted daughter, Carolyn Wright of Estill, South Carolina; sons, Sammie (Diane) Frazier, Jr., and Gregory Frazier both of Estill, SC, and Jerome (Quoshanda) Frazier of Columbia, South Carolina; stepson, Rudolph Gordon of Estill, South Carolina; adopted daughter in love, Dr. Sarah (Rodney) Williams of Hampton, SC; three sisters, Louise Wright, Henrietta Simmons, and Clara Evans; three brothers, Wilbert Gordon, Joe Lee (Ethel) Gordon, and Jimmie Lee (Kathy) Gordon; a special sister-in-law, Shirley Gillison; two God children, Deondra and Deon Martin; twenty grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
