Deacon Harrison Whipple Obituary

One of the most difficult things to deal with in life is the death of a loved one. God’s Holy Words inform us that no man knows the day or the hour, so we have to live each day holy and preparing for our departure. The Bible tells us that our citizenship is in Heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body. It is with deep regrets and upmost sadness to announce the passing of Deacon Harrison Whipple on Sunday, April 15, 2018, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina.  The family will receive visitors at the Whipple's residence, 175 Furman Nixville Expressway, Estill, South Carolina.  Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00, Friday, April 20, 2018, Second Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 2372 Cypress Creek Road, Pineland, SC. Funeral service will be held 12 noon Saturday, April 21, 2018, Second Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 2372 Cypress Creek Road, Pineland, SC with burial in the Second Thankful Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pineland, SC.

Harrison Whipple, Sr. was born June 28, 1937, the first of four children to Levi Thomas Whipple and Louis Myers Whipple. He was reared in Savannah, GA and at an early age accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized at Saint Luke Baptist Church.  Attending local schools, he graduated from Woodsville High School in 1955.  His athletic abilities earned him a scholarship to Savannah State University.  Harrison left college for service in the U.S. Air Force. He subsequently returned to Savannah after the death of his father as the sole surviving son, at which time he began his entrepreneurial journey taking over his fathers business.  After a number of years, he decided to leave Savannah and eventually settled in New York.  There in Brooklyn, NY he met and married Virginia Young, owned businesses, and resided in New York until they both returned to Furman, S.C., Virginia’s hometown.

Harrison will forever be remembered for his deep abiding love for the lord and his family.  As a life-long learner, he enjoyed exploring museums and historical sights while traveling.  He was an avid reader of books and periodicals.  His ability developed and nurtured many friendships. His knowledge of history and debating “our history” is legendary.  At Second Thankful (Missionary) Baptist Church, he found his church home where he loved to fellowship with the deacons and members. As a devoted member, he became an intricate part of ministry and leadership.  Let us remember his favorite quote “God is good”.

Harrison leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: a loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Virginia Whipple; three sons, Michael, Jeffrey, Vincent (Tiffaney); two daughters, Michelle (Luke), and Judy; three sisters, Ruthie (Savannah, GA), Gracie (Fort Washington, MD, and Mary (Jacksonville, FL); God-Daughter, Francina O’Berry; his in-laws, the Gants and Young’s of Furman; 13 grand children, 6 great grand-children, as well as, a host of nieces and nephews.
