“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
Though I’m gone, my guidance will continue to shine upon your paths. I am at peace knowing that my children and grandchildren are surrounded by love and support. It was my time to depart my earthly home, though I know you all are sad, now that I am at peace and no longer suffering so, please rejoice and be glad.
Sister Dorothy Cherry, the daughter of the late Eugene Cherry and Elease Smoak Lott, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 28, 1964. She was one of the youngest daughters of fourteen siblings whom they affectionately called “Dot”. Upon her mother moving to South Carolina, meeting, and marrying her second husband, Van Jerome Lott, she and a few of her siblings continued to be reared in the South. She was educated in the public schools of Hampton County and attended Job Corps. She met, dated, and then married her children’s father, and though their union did not last, out of their union they produced three beautiful girls, Ikea, Adrin, and Shabree.
Later in life, she joined her bonus father’s church, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She was very active in the church, where she joined the usher board, was a member of the missionary board, helped as needed with the kitchen committee, and was recruited to help the youth. She loved it when her children and grandchildren would visit her and attend church with her, where she could brag on them and introduce them to her church family. Known as “Granny” by her grandchildren, she ensured she showed each one of them her love and support.
Dot’s interest included spending time with her children, grandchildren, visits from her siblings who reside in New Jersey and Philadelphia, rooting for her all-time favorite football team the Philadelphia Eagles (where one could always find her wearing their gear), cooking, grilling, riding her bike, staying fit, and serving God as an Usher while spending time with her newfound church family. She also enjoyed keeping her grandchildren for a week every summer which her children immensely enjoyed.
Though she was tired in her borrowed earthly vessel, she greatly enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her girls leading up to her heavenly departure. In the early morning of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the Lord Almighty sent one of his angels to escort her to her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Cherry Sr., Elease Smoak Lott, and Van Jerome Lott; sister, Janet Cherry and brothers-in-law, Michael Bell and George Coleman.
She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Ikea Wilson (Marcus), Adrin Wilson (Chris), and Shabree Wilson (Ansel); five grandchildren, Traveon, Chassidy, Adriona, A’myah, and Charridy; five sisters, Theresa Bell, Barbara Cherry Newman (Gregory), Valerie Cherry Coleman, Yvonne Cherry, and Catherine Cherry; seven brothers, Eugene Cherry Jr., Curtis Cherry, Willie Cherry, Anthony Cherry, David Cherry, John Cherry, and Eugene Cherry III; a niece and nephew she helped her parents raise and spoil, Tyeshia Lockhart and Jamar Cherry; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church family.
