Dorothy Roberts Brown Obituary

On October 26, 2022, death beckon me with outstretched hands and whisper softly about "An Unknown Land". I knew that my time on earth had come to an end. My Heavenly Father sent his angels to guide my spirit home that’s why, I was not afraid to go. I took the death angels’ hands without a fear, for He who safely brought me here will also take me safely back. Although in life, that were many things I did not know or understand, I knew that God would not let me go alone into the "Valley That's Unknown".

Dorothy Ann Roberts was born October 9, 1952, in Brunswick, Georgia. She was the twelfth of fourteen children born to the union of Justine (Jones) and Luke Roberts. Her siblings were: Samuel, Sidney, Mattie, Jacquelyn, Gloria, Erma, Mary, Jestine, Joe, David, Wanda, and Terry. She also had four half-brothers:  Artis, Harry, Holland, and Leroy. All of the afore mentioned preceded her in death except for Herman. He is the only surviving sibling.

Dorothy was educated in the Glynn County Public School System. She attended Risley Elementary, Risley Jr. High, Sarah Molette Jr. High, and was a 1970 graduate of Risley High School, where she was a star basketball player, cheerleader and she also ran track. Dorothy continued her education at McKinney Job Corp Center in McKinney, Texas, where she received training in administrative and communication skills.

Dorothy was the mother of one child, JaQuambia Aneetra Roberts. After fourteen years of togetherness, she was united in Holy matrimony to Sam Brown, Jr., on February 14, 1996.

Dorothy’s first church affiliation was with Zion Baptist Church from early childhood to adulthood. She accepted Christ, was baptized, and active in the ministry in various areas of the church. She later attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church for a short period of time. Upon relocating to Jacksonville, Florida, she attended King Solomon Baptist Church.

In the early 1980’s, after relocating to Jacksonville, she was employed by Florida Christian Health Center as a Certified Nurse Assistant, after training for 12 years. She was later employed by Cathedral Nursing Home, where she worked until retirement ending her career in 2020.

Dorothy was a social justice, civil rights and voter registration advocate encouraging people not only to get registered but also compelling them to exercise their rights in these areas. As a student at Job Corp, she became a student activist and was affiliated with the Black Panther Party, where she met and befriended Afenei Shakur, Tupac’s mother. Dorothy enjoyed soulful and R & B music, softball, dancing, and NFL football. She was a diehard Jacksonville Jaguar and Georgia Bulldog fan.

We are in this world for a limited time. This world is not our home. We are just passing through on our way to a mansion that God has prepared for us. On October 26, 2022, at 11:49 am, Dorothy departed this life at St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

She leaves to cherish wonderful memories: husband, Sam Brown; daughter, JaQuambia Roberts; granddaughter, Najah Asberry; brother, Herman Lee Roberts (Stephanie); stepsons, Arvin Johnson (Kasia) and Brandon Humphrey; step-grandchildren Kaila and Alexander; sister-in-law, Katharine Jones; aunts, Susie Mae Jones, and Norris Jones; a very dear friend/cousin, Gregory Byrd;  cousin, teammate, and classmate Bahiyyah Sadiki aka Brenda Clark; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
