Ernestine Smiley Obituary

Ernestine was born on September 29, 1943, to the late Harrison and Adlet Whing Grant. She was the second born of thirteen children, seven of which preceded her in death.

Ernestine was joined in matrimony to Archie Smiley of Riceboro, Georgia in 1965 and to this union was born two daughters: Lawanda and Imogene (Emma for short). Ernestine was the mother of five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Rose and Larry.

Ernestine’s faith walk began as a young girl at Emmanuel Baptist Church on St. Simons Island, GA, where she was baptized. After reaching adulthood, she moved to Brunswick, GA, where she joined St. John Baptist Church on “G” Street. In later years, she moved her membership to Holy Band of Inspiration under the leadership of Prophet Harry Brown. She was a faithful and dedicated worker in the church. Here she finished her faith walk.

Ernestine was educated in the Glynn County School System where she graduated from Risley High School. She was later employed as a bookkeeper at Rich Sea Pak on St. Simons Island. Some years later, she was a teller at First National Bank. She was a hard worker. To take care of her family, she secured a second jobs. She was employed at Alfonzo Supper Club, King and Prince, Shoney’s; and lastly Cracker Barrel, after which she retired.

Ernestine’s house was an open door for all who passed her way. We had a large family. She helped take care of her siblings, her grandmother, Lettie Cummings and her mother. Her family was the love of her life. She was lovingly known to her family as “Stine” of “Ernie.” Her favorite phrase was “Praise the Lord.” She was bad with names. If she couldn’t remember your name, you became “Sugga.

Ernie was humble, kindhearted, and sweet. She was a powerful prayer warrior, kept her sword with her and read it every day until her health went down. But she hid it in her heart and called on the name of Jesus. She honored her name “Smiley.” When she couldn’t talk after her strokes, we saw more smiles on her face than we ever saw before her illness. We were assured the love, and the joy of the Lord was still dwelling in her and it lifted and encouraged so many. Ernestine will truly be missed. She is out of our presence, but she will always be in our hearts.

She leaves to cherish her memories: son, Stacey W. (Sheryl) Grant of Macon, GA; daughters, LaWanda (Terry) McGill of Brunswick, GA and Imogene Smiley Roberts of Fitzgerald, GA.; eleven grandchildren, Charles III (CJ), Berrian, Jeremy, Ricky, Joshua, Jonathan, Latoria, Latisha, Natalia, Courtney and Shatorria; one step granddaughter, Terrianna; four great grandchildren, Anaiya, Jayden, Jaylen and Deshaun, Jr.; three brothers, Harrison (Dianne) Grant, Jr. of Jamaica Queens, NY, Richard H. (Charmain) Grant of Norfolk, VA, and Anthony B. Grant of Brunswick, GA; three sisters, Carolyn Grant (Robert) Augustus, Adlet Patricia Grant both of Darien, GA and Linda Grant (Danieul) Kerns of St. Simons Island, GA; one goddaughter, LaKiesha Walker; a host of other nieces, nephews, other sorrowing family, friends, and loved ones.
