Former McIntosh County Sheriff Charles Jones Obituary

Charles Wilbert "Chunk" Jones was born and raised in Darien, Georgia to the parents of Charlie Jones and Venus Thomas of McIntosh County. Charlie, a commercial fisherman for his entire life obtained his experience in the Gulf of Mexico, passing his experience on to Charles. Charles attended McIntosh County Schools, graduating from Todd Grant High School. Charles went on to join the United States Army, serving in the D Company (3rd-60 Infantry) and served in Vietnam in 1968 with the Mobile Riverine Force. Additionally, Charles served in the United States Air Force Reserve and Army Reserve.

Charles married his high school sweetheart, the late Brenda Marie (Brown) Jones, who shared three adult children, Christopher "Chris", Vanessa and Felica (Jonathan). Vanessa proceeded Charles and Brenda to be with the Lord.

Charles began his career in law enforcement in 1971 with the Brunswick (Georgia) Police Department, later joining the City of Darien Police Department. Charles was promoted to Chief of Police for the City of Darien shortly thereafter and served the citizens of Darien, protecting & serving. Having earned experience & swore to uphold the laws of the state within our coastal communities, Charles joined the Georgia State Patrol, graduating as a state trooper with the graduating class #50. Excelling in the career, Charles departed The Georgia State Patrol and accepted employment with The Fort Stewart Provost Marshal's Office, as a traffic accident investigator for several years. Charles returned to his hometown and accepted a position as Captain (Assistant Chief) with the City of Darien (Under Chief Steven Crowder and Mayor David Bluestein). With determination, Charles won his first sheriff's election, going on to serve the community from 1993-2008 and accepted the honored title of Sheriff. Sheriff Jones, the experienced, people's sheriff understood the uniform, the commitment and dedication needed to serve and never gave up the fight for his community.

As a commercial shrimp fisherman & captain of his shrimp boat, Charles named his boat after his daughter, "Lady Vanessa" and subsequently went on to name several additional shrimp boats Captain Chris, Vickie E, Sea Prowler and Carol Jean. Charles resided in the unincorporated area of Darien and was a resident of McIntosh County his entire life. Charles enjoyed exploring and completing maintenance on the shrimp boat, attending sporting events with his grandson Donnovan and visiting his granddaughter Crystal, Crysia, grandson Devin and his great-grandchildren.

Charles was the brother to Beverly Jones Tyson (Howard), Nettal "Net" Cooper (Jerome), Bronda Riggins (Arthur) and Abraham "Pooch" Thomas. Abraham and Beverly proceeded him in death. Charles leaves behind several Godsisters, Godbrothers, Godchildren, family members, classmates, close friends, and a host of friends and mentors that he loved dearly.
