Herman Roberts Obituary

Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him in life. On April 23, 2023, the Heavenly Father sent his Angels to guide Herman’s spirit home. Herman Lee Roberts, affectionately also known as “Luke”, was born on May 25, 1951, in Brunswick, Georgia. He was the 11th child of Justine (Jones) and Luke Roberts. He was the last surviving child of Justine and Luke’s 14 children, “the last of the Mohicans/Roberts siblings”, in which their legacy is instilled and will reign forever. Preceding him in death are his siblings: Sam, Sidney, Mattie, Jacqueline, Gloria Jean, Erma, Mary Louise, Jestine, Joe, David, Dorothy Ann, Wanda, and Terry. He also had four half-brothers: Holland, Leroy, Artis, and Harry.

Herman was educated by the Glynn County public school system. He attended Risley Elementary and Risley Junior High, Sarah Molette Junior High, and Risley High School. Herman was an avid baseball player and was an instructor through his high school years and beyond. Herman played baseball for Selden Park and Risley High School. In 1972, Herman enlisted in the United States Army, where he was an admirable and intelligent honor student and was assigned to the 84th Engineering BN(Const) USARPNC. During his service tenure, he was active duty as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Herman separated from the United States Army with an honorable discharge and received several awards and recognitions, which included the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. After being discharged, he returned to Brunswick and continued his education at Coastal Community College. He was later employed by City Parks/Public Works Department for 27 years until his retirement on August 28, 2021.

Herman’s childhood church affiliation was Zion Baptist Church in Brunswick, GA. He was baptized by Rev. Julius C Hope. He has expressed that he was not religious, but he was spiritual. He was a believer in Jehovah and Jesus. The scripture that he referred to often preceding his death was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

Herman “Luke” was very well known for his humorous side and love for many sports, but he especially had an admiration for baseball. Herman was a star player, mastered the sport, and often utilized his skills to train and educate others.

On February 23, 1996, Herman Roberts and Stephanie Weems were united in Holy Matrimony in Brunswick, Georgia, where they also made their home. They were married for 27 loving years. Herman was also the father of two children, Phillip Roberts (Brunswick, GA) and Karima Roberts (Jacksonville, FL).

Herman, being the last surviving sibling, was a pillar to his siblings’ children and the generations that followed as he instilled the value of family, being supportive, and always unified as a family unit. These values, in addition to other memorable excerpts, were repeatedly expressed at the onset of his transitioning period. Herman was often characterized as a quiet person that exemplified the traits of being a good listener, observant, and highly intelligent.

He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories: his wife, Stephanie Roberts; son, Phillip Roberts (Angie); daughter, Karima Roberts; stepson, DeMarcos Dorsey; grandchildren, Brittany Roberts, Keown Jones, Chasity Dorsey, Ty’nicia Dorsey, DeAndre Watson, Marquel Jackson, Nicole Wilson, Jasmine Wiggins, Rashad Lewis, and Amajori Wiggins; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Corliss Jackson, Minnie Weems, Chandra Weems, Veronica Brooks, and Constance Campbell; brothers-in-law, Willie Weems and Wesley Allen (Radiah); a dear nephew, Johnathan Young; aunts, Susie Mae Jones and Norris Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

“Often said, seldom done.”
