Joseph Wesley Obituary

To all my loved ones that I am leaving behind. Please be forever grateful and thankful for the happiness we’ve shared. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much. This place was never meant to be a permanent home for any of us. Through all the pain and heartaches, give praises and honor to my Father for my seventy-eight years. I lived my three scores and ten that God promised me and eight more, so now I am free. Remember my amazing radiant smile and my love for all of my family and friends.

Joseph Wesley was born December 25, 1943, in Hampton County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Hattie Mae Williams and the late Porter Wesley. “He was affectionately known to his family and friends as “Jimbo”. God created an amazing father, son, brother, grandfather, nephew, uncle, and friend, who left a memorable impression on each life that he touched. He grew up in an era where students attended their neighborhood schools, so he received his formal education at the Rosenwald School, Gifford, SC. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and became affiliated with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Gifford, SC. He was employed by Browning's Aviation and several other logging companies. He was also the owner of Jimbo's Lawn Care Service.

During his leisure, he enjoyed fishing, cruising around on his golf cart, hanging out with his friends at Harry’s Lawn Mower Service and Gray’s One Stop. His favorite colors were tan and brown. He loved wearing a pair of “Hush Puppies”.

Joseph was united in holy matrimony with Alice Gardner. Their union was blessed with Virginia, Alphonzo, Verdell, Paulette, Michael, and Joseph.

God’s plans are not always our plans. When the angels came for “Jimbo” on September 20, 2022, it was much sooner than we planned, but we’ll brave the grief that comes and try to understand.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Gardner Wesley; parents, Hattie Mae Williams Wesley and Porter Wesley; daughters, Cynthia Gardner and Angela Frazier; son, Edwin Wesley; grandchildren, Julius Gardner and Kewanna Wesley; and brother, Cleveland Wesley.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memories: daughters, Virginia Wesley of Gifford, SC, Paulette Wesley of Scotia, SC, Patricia Albany of Allendale, SC, Delphine Patterson and Stacey Manuel both of Atlanta, GA; sons, Alphonzo and Verdell Gardner both of Gifford, SC, Joseph Jr., of NC. Timothy Manuel of Barnwell, SC and Michael Gardner of Spartanburg, SC; forty-two grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; sisters, Lillie “Lila” Gray of Gifford, SC and Linda (Johnnie) Green of Varnville, SC; brothers, James (Luester) Wesley of East Orange, NJ, Leroy (Deloris) Wesley of Gifford, SC, Willie Lee (Carolyn) Wesley of Varnville, SC; brother and sister in love, Carolyn and Deacon James Stokes; God daughter, Felicia Moore-Frazier, sisters-in-law, Barbara (Jim) Gregory of Gifford, SC, Willa Mae Mitchell of Gifford, SC, and Rose Wesley of Brunson, SC; brothers-in-law, Deacon Horny Mitchell of Gifford, SC, and Ronald (Synovia) Mitchell of Summerville, SC; aunts, Carrie Carr of East Orange, NJ, Mary Famularo of Jersey City, NJ , and Melef Williams of Newark, NJ; special friends, Soletta Taylor, Josephine Early, Edgar Williams, Harry Taylor , and Sammy L.
