Lucius Leon (Joe) Brown was born on December 19, 1951, to Lucius Brown and Jeanette Richardson Brown in Brunswick, GA. Lucius Brown received his formal education at Risley High School in Brunswick, GA. He graduated on May 3, 1969. He was an exceptional football player and led the Tigers in the State Championship game of 1969. He is named in a documentary on exceptional football talent out of Brunswick, GA.
Lucius attended Worship Cathedral Church of Lorain, OH for fifteen years under the leadership of Pastor Terrance Bivins. He served as a deacon for eight years and was the head of maintenance and groundskeeping for twelve years.
Lucius arrived in Cleveland, OH, in 1972 to help his mom who resided there at that time. He played semi-pro football from 1972-1975 for the Youngstown Hardhats, baseball for the Black American Club for approximately ten years, and softball for the Lorain Co-Ed Division for seven years. Having the desire to bestow his talents in potential athletics, Lucius coached Lorain Youth Baseball for Gargasz Law from 1997-1999 and the xAmerican Slovak Club Youth Baseball from 2000-2008 where they won two city championship titles in 2006 and 2008.He was employed by General Motors in Parma, OH, for twelve years. After the downsizing of General Motors, he became employed with Modern Tool and Die in Parma, OH for twenty-three years.
After moving to Ohio, Lucius met and married Brenda Brown. This union was blessed with a son, Joseph Leon Brown. He was a loving husband, great father and awesome grandfather. He was known for his kindness towards others and for helping those in need. Later in life, he met and married Tabitha Watson Brown. This union was blessed with a beautiful, blended family of six.
Lucius Leon Joseph Brown departed this life on February 10, 2025. He was preceded in death by his father, Lucius Brown; mother, Jeanette Richardson Brown Garnar; grandparents, Richard and Elizabeth (Blue) Richardson; aunts, Elvera Rodgers (John Wesley), Susie A. Sullivan (Samuel), Judge Dr. Thelma A. Hart (Willie James); great-aunt, Nancy Richardson Whitten (Carlton); uncles, Richard “Sonny Boy” Richardson (Blanche), George W. Richardson (Frances), Simon Bailey (Willie M) and George Mumford (Bernice).
He leaves to mourn his passing: his son, Joseph Leon Brown, bonus children, Eugenia Epps, Angela Brightwell, Eric Epps, Erika (Jeff) Arbaugh, Alise Mincy, Zarie Alexis Nicole Mincy, and John F. Mincy II; eight bonus grandchildren; sisters, Elvera Brown Bethel (Robert), Dr. Patrica Brown, and Elder Janice Brown Moore; best friends for over forty years that were like his brothers, Joseph Payne and Joseph Hawkins; lifetime friends, Rev. Leonard Rowe, Bro. Ellis Williams and Dea. Rayfield Barneman; a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Ms. Tabitha Watson Brown and Ms. Brenda Brown; 1969 Classmates of Risley High School; and many other friends.
