March Grovner, Sr.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, MARCH GROVNER, SR., a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, family member, church member, and friend, departed this life for another land, “a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” —Hebrews 11:10 (KJV)

March was born on May 7, 1952, to the late Mildred W. Grovner and the late Ceaser Grovner, Sr., of Sapelo Island, Georgia. At an early age, he developed a strong devotion to family and a love for nature. He hunted the land and fished the waters of Sapelo Island with his father and brothers and gardened vegetables and plants with his mother and sisters. He received his formal education through the McIntosh County and Glynn County public school systems.

At a young age, March grew up serving at St. Luke Baptist Church on Sapelo Island, Georgia. A man of strong faith, he later accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Resurrection Church of God In Christ under the mentorship of the late Elder Alexander Crawford. He also attended Holy Temple Church of God In Christ, pastored by Elder Lawrence Lemon. Later in life, he joined Holy Band of Inspiration D.T. Inc. where he remained a faithful member until his passing. His favorite Bible verse was: “And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.” —Exodus 15:26 (KJV)

Known for his dedication and hard work, March held various positions with a moving company, a landscaping company, and Sea Island Company before beginning a long and fruitful career with Hercules, Inc. where he retired after more than 30 years of service due to medical reasons. During his years with Hercules, he also operated his own bail bonding business.

March lived a life marked by determination, kindness, generosity, hard work, and dedication. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, harvesting, and sharing the bounty of his outings with family and friends. He was a talented carpenter and woodworker who completed a total rebuild of the home he shared with his wife, Mary, and their children. He enjoyed bowling, watching sports, reminiscing about historical events, traveling, and gathering with family and friends. Most of all, he cherished spending quality time with his grandchildren, talking and joking with them during their special moments together.

March Grovner, Sr., was united in holy matrimony to Mary M. Heck Grovner on September 6, 1999; together they shared 41 years of love, partnership, and devotion until his passing.

March leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Mary M. Heck Grovner; and children, Latausha (Thomas) Boone of Richmond, VA, March (Constance) Grovner, Jr., of Hinesville, GA, Franklin Heck of Brunswick, GA, Ongeria (Melba) Grovner of Brunswick, GA, James (Terri) Grovner of Richmond, VA, Kristile (Michael) Heck Bostic of Brunswick, GA, Ross Heck of Brunswick, GA, and Marcus Heck of Brunswick, GA. He also leaves behind his siblings, Mary Lee (Johnny) Matthews of Brunswick, GA, Maggie Mae (Williams Jr.) Banks of Sapelo Island, GA, Ceaser (Inez) Grovner of Brunswick, GA, Joyce (David) Wood of Brunswick, GA, Iregene (Yvonne) Grovner of Sapelo Island, GA, and Bobby Gene Grovner of Sapelo Island, GA. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Mamie Grovner and James Grovner.

He also leaves to cherish his memory: his sisters-in-law, Elsie Heck Johnson of St. Simons Island, GA, Emma (Minister John) Lucio of Brunswick, GA, and Jannie Flowers of Woodbridge, VA; brothers-in-law, Andrew Heck, Jr., James Heck, and Jimmie Heck, all of Brunswick, GA, and Johnny (Tina) Flowers of Pinetown, NC. March’s legacy continues through 39 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; uncles-in-law, William (Johnnie) Heck of Waverly, GA, and Willie Flowers of Brunswick, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will dearly miss him.
