Margie A. Smoak

Margie Ann Smoak lived a life shaped by faith, family, and the simple joys that brought her peace. Born on December 9, 1939, she grew up in Estill, South Carolina, where she received her education in the Hampton County public school system and graduated from the famous Estill Training School. Her southern upbringing, along with her educational experiences, formed the foundation of her character, which was resilience, strength, and quiet grace.

At an early age, Margie accepted Christ as her Savior at First Baptist Church, Estill, South Carolina. Her faith was not loud or boastful; it was lived gently, consistently, and with a sincerity that touched everyone around her. She believed in kindness, doing what was right, and caring for others in ways that often went unnoticed but were always deeply felt.

Margie enjoyed the things that made life warm and beautiful. She enjoyed shopping for little treasures, tending to her garden, decorating her home with love and caring for her beloved dogs. These were not just hobbies; they were expressions of her nurturing spirit and her desire to create comfort for herself and those she loved.

For 32 years, she worked as a Ticket Agent with Off Track Betting. Her coworkers and customers knew her as dependable, pleasant, and steady. She was a woman who took pride in her work and treated everyone with respect.

Margie’s greatest joy, however, was her family. She loved them fiercely and quietly in the way she showed up, supported, encouraged, and prayed for them. Her children, grandchildren, and great‐grandchildren were the lights of her life, and she carried each of them in her heart.

Though Margie has completed her earthly journey, her legacy remains in the lives she shaped, the love she gave, and the memories she leaves behind. Her presence will be missed but her spirit will continue to guide, comfort, and inspire those who knew her best.

On May 18, 2026, Margie peacefully transitioned from this life. She was preceded in death by her father, Charley A. Strong; mother, Gevena Bowers Strong; sisters, Mona Wright, Viola Peeples, and Cordelia Howard; brothers, Craig Strong and Sidney Carter; and grandchildren, Shildlee Primus and Romello J. Chavious-DePaula.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Guy Smoak of Roselle, NJ, Charlene (Deon) Chavious Thompson of Hampton, VA, and Wendi (Moises) Gomez of West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Tammy Primus, Charon Chavious, Tasha Chavious, Troy Chavious, and Jonathan Smoak-McFarland; great-grandchildren, Martrez Chavious-Fenner, Marcus Smoak-McFarland, Adrian Smoak-McFarland, Troy J. Chavious, Jr., King J. Chavious, Tahj Henderson, and Olivia Chavious; sister, Sandra (Ralph) Ruiz of Hepzibah, GA; brothers, Bobby (Vivian) Strong of Chester, OH, and Jeffery (Donna) Strong of Columbia, SC; and a host of other family members and friends.
