Mary Fields Obituary

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Revelations 21:4

I did not want to leave you all because I loved each of you in my own special way, but when God heard my secret cries, His death angels came to take me home. After eighty-four years of life and many trials and tribulations, I welcomed my departure from this land because Earth was never my permanent home. There was peace and serenity on this journey. My journey through this life is over, but my true journey has just begun! Don’t cry for me, but rejoice instead, because I am now free and resting in my new home.

On December 23, 1939, in Gifford, South Carolina, God blessed the late Ernest Williams and the late Stella Gardner with a ray of sunshine that they named Mary Ann. Mary Ann, affectionately known as “NAP” was a beautiful and gentle soul with a radiating soft spirit.

Mary Ann was educated in the public schools of Hampton District #2. She worked as a custodian at Estill Elementary School for 25 years, 6 months, and 12 days which she often reminded those that graced her presence of this accomplishment. She was a member of First Estill Baptist Church.

She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Family was very important to her. The best moments in her life were spent with her children and grandchildren, sitting on the porch, and watching out for her neighborhood and neighbors. She was a vital member of the village that contributed to raising the children that grew up on Morrison Avenue.

Mary Ann and her amazing husband, John Lawton “Skin” Fields, Sr., were united in holy matrimony in January of 1961, Allendale, South Carolina. Their union was blessed with six children. “He who is powerful, He who is wise.

He who is all compassionate and has all understanding, stretched forth His hand and took the hands of our loved one on January 19, 2024, which was much sooner than we planned, we’ll brave the grief that comes and try to understand. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Lawton Fields, Sr., sibling, Ernest Gardner, James Edward Gardner, Abe Gardner, Carrie Ann Amaker, Eloise Robinson, Louise Davis, Henrietta Williams; son-in-law, William White; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen Johnson, Rosa Lee Maxwell, Annie Lee Brown, Woodrow Brown, and Martha Ella Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Evon (Donnell) Fields, Carolyn White, and Linda (Richard) Fields all of Estill; sons, John (Cattie Lee) Fields, Jr., and Henry Fields both of Estill, SC and Raymond W Brunso, special great-grandchildren Jamell “JJ” Duncan, Mariff Fields, Jr. and Latravis Fields Jr; 16 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Diane (Sammie) Frazier, Diane Roberts, Ernestine Weedon, Elizabeth (Vincent) Perry, Robert (Sylvia) Williams, Sandra Williams (John), Helen Williams (Arlington) Bey, Maria Williams (Benjamin), Harold (Victoria) Williams, Ernest Williams, Willie (Toni) Mixson, and Junia Williams; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joseph (Charlene) Brown, Elnora (Henry) Devore, Pearlie Mae (Bishop John) Bowers, Mary Monroe, George Brown, Jr., Anderson (Pearlie) Brown, Sr., Henry Brown, and Abraham (Annie Jean) Brown; special friend, Damien Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
