Michael Bernard Chapman was born on July 25, 1959, in Jacksonville, Florida to Ms. Katie Chapman Alford and Mr. Roosevelt Ferguson, Sr. When Michael was a child, his mother met and married Mr. Robert Alford, Sr., who raised him as his own.

Michael, affectionately known to his family and close friends as Boo-koo, was educated in the Glynn Public County School System. Michael had a passion for traveling, fishing, shrimping, and crabbing. During his early years, he would earn a living with Lewis Crab Factory, where he would behead shrimp and clean fish. He would also take on jobs where he would travel the seas for months at a time. He often brought seafood home to his family. Later, Michael joined the Sea Island Company where he worked in several capacities, until his retirement after 20 plus years of service.

Mike met the love of his life, Beverly Thomas, in 1985. They were married on December 7, 1991, in Brunswick, GA.

If you knew Mike, you knew he was always willing to offer his help to you. He loved life and lived it to its fullest. He was a fighter, as he never gave up hope for another day to continue his independence, and he was a hard worker. Even after retirement, he continued to work at Ryan’s Steakhouse, Nick’s Yum Yum Shop, and finally Coastal Kitchen until his health started to decline.  Michael was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. E.C. Tillman. He later joined Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Joel Alford, Jr., where he served as a deacon until his health failed.

Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mrs. Beverly Chapman; his mother, Ms. Katie Chapman Alford; his fathers, Mr. Robert Alford, Sr., and Mr. Robert Ferguson, Sr.

Michael leaves to cherish his memories and legacy: three daughters, Jenell Williams, Engrid Thomas, and Lanasha Thomas all of Brunswick, GA; one son, Larry Carter, Jr., of Brunswick, GA; one sister, Pamela (James) Buggs; three brothers, Robert Alford, Jr. (Michelle), Earl Alford, and Jimmy Alford all of Brunswick, GA; one maternal aunt, Jessie Clark of Brunswick, GA; one maternal uncle, Frank Chapman of Jacksonville, FL; one paternal aunt, Lynette (Alfred) Wrice of Brunswick, GA; grandchildren, D’Andre Carroll, Dayja Williams, Michael Williams, Diamond Thomas, Saucoya Thomas, Natalia Walker, Damaria Thomas, Jonisha Lang, Breck Whitten, Jr., Cali Love Albertie, London Carter, Aaliyah Carter, and King Carter; great grandchildren, Shakih, Jr., D’Ivory, Shakur, Dondre, J’Tayla, Darren, Dareon, Ti’Mia, Samiir, Raleigh, and Timothy III; and a host of nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
