EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY
Mildred was born on October 9, 1941, in Brunswick, Georgia, to Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Louise Short. She was known affectionately as “Sister” by her family. Raised in the Brookman Community, Mildred attended school there and received her early education in that close-knit environment.
FAITH AND CHURCH INVOLVEMENT
Mildred accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and was baptized by Reverend R.J. Leggett at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. She maintained a lifelong membership and consistent involvement in the church until her health no longer allowed active participation.
CAREER AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
Mildred dedicated 24 years of service to the Glynn County school system as a custodian. She was respected and appreciated by both staff and students for her kindness and gentle spirit. Always willing to help others, Mildred’s generosity and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
Outside of her work, Mildred enjoyed dining at Ole Times Country Buffet, traveling, and visiting her beloved family and friends. She found great pleasure in these gatherings and in sharing meals, especially when eating crabs.
FAMILY AND LEGACY
Mildred was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 43 years, Mr. Robert Lee Small; parents, Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Louise Short; two daughters, Francis Estelle Bryson and Alfreda Denise Small; and five brothers, Mr. Roosevelt Short, Mr. Henry Short, Mr. Claude Short, Mr. Perry Short, and Mr. Robert Short, Sr.
She leaves behind a loving and devoted daughter, Alma (Richard) Cash; two loving sons, James (Suzanne) Bryson, Jr., and Earnest (Karessa) Small; a cherished bonus daughter, Angela (Craig) Hobbs; and a devoted sister, Betty Jean Short Slay. Her extended family includes sisters-in-law, Christine Short, Laura Short, Louise Small, and Sarah Small; a devoted niece, Irish Kirby; a devoted cousin, Gretta Paisley; Pastor Thelma Nelson was not only her Pastor, but her dear friend and confidant, 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends who will cherish her memory.
