Richard Jimmie Smith was born on February 8,1941, to the late Mr. Joseph Smith and Mrs. Martha Andrews Smith of Hancock County, Georgia. He joined St. Paul Baptist Church of Brunswick, Georgia at an early age.
Richard received his education in the Glynn County School System and was a 1960 graduate of Risley High School. He worked as a barber cutting hair and with the City of Brunswick’s Public Works Department. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army. He loved serving his country and made it a lifetime career. Richard had a natural talent for art. His favorite
hobbies were drawing, painting, and playing the guitar.
Richard married Rose Sanders in January 1963. The union lasted 14 years and 6 months. From this union they had two children, Richard Stanley Smith (son) and Caryn Delicia Smith (daughter). He later married his second wife, Joanne Baker and had one son, Corey Smith. Corey preceded him in death.
SSGT. Richard J. Smith’s health began to fail in his later years, and on September 7, 2021, he departed this life.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two children, son, Richard S. Smith, and daughter, Caryn D. Smith, of Brunswick, GA; three sisters, Estella Smith of Brunswick, GA, Grace Smith Lee (Edward) of New York, NY, and Carion Smith of New York, NY; two brothers, Marvin Smith of New York, NY and Don H. Smith of Atlanta, GA; several nephews, Hershey Parland, Chris Lee, Julian Lee, Mark Smith, and Omari Smith; and a host of cousins and friends.
