“For I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. PRECIOUS MEMORIES I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:6-7
I could not wait for death, so death kindly came for me. When the Angel of Death summoned me, I welcomed my departure from this land because life has been great to me. There’s peace and serenity on this journey called death. I took the road of death because I knew that my Master was waiting along the roadside to take me on to eternity. In life, we all have a beginning and a purpose. Samuel Nix, affectionately known as “Sam,” was born on April 18, 1949, to Lonza and Mae Ola Nix in Clyo, GA. Surrounded by family, on June 6, 2024, Sam was called home to be with the Lord. I am now awaiting the second coming of our Lord and Savior with the great cloud of witnesses.
Sam received his formal education from Springfield Central High, graduating with the class of 1967. After graduating from Springfield Central High, he enlisted into the United States Army on April 10, 1969, with an honorable discharge on July 15, 1971. Sam continued with the Army Reserves following his discharge from the army.
On September 5, 1969, he was united in holy matrimony with the beautiful Ms. Rosa Pelote. Their union was blessed with three beautiful daughters: Sandra, Michelle, and Raven. Sam was married to his soulmate, Rosa for 47 years. Following the death of his soulmate, Rosa, Sam married Swannie Sessions Jacobs. The two were married for almost two years until her death.
Sam was a member of Thee Deliverance Church, under the leadership of Apostle Frances A. Nix, in the early years of the ministry, serving as the Bass Player with the TDC Band. Remembered for his gifted hands, Sam had a passionate love for playing the bass guitar. In his early days, he was the bass player for the Sweet Rock Gospel Singers, traveling locally and making records during that time. He loved working on cars in his younger years and as he got to his older days, he enjoyed working in the yard of his family property riding his tractor. He loved the color blue, which is parallel with his personality trait as he was one to keep to himself, but sincere in everything he did. He was such a delight with an indescribable playful attitude never wanting to be in the front or center of attention, yet he was just that guy. His heart to give in secret is the sole reason he was blessed beyond measures. Respected for being a hard and devoted worker, Sam worked for DICOA Iron Company for a short while and following this, he was employed with the International Longshoremen Local 1414, Savannah, Georgia. He worked as a Header/Walking Boss retiring in December 2023 after 35 years of faithful and dedicated service. Sam was affectionately called Sugarman by many at the port and will be remembered by his fearless leadership.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Rosa Pelote-Nix; parents, Lonza and Mae Ola Nix; grandson, Zackary Housey; brothers, Paul and Nelson Nix; sisters, Ola Mae Overstreet and Ophelia Nix; and his second wife, Swannie Sessions Jacobs-Nix.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his lovely children, Sandra (Jeffery, Sr.) Hester of Savannah, GA, Michelle and Raven Nix both of Clyo, GA; grandchildren, Maliek (Micaiah) Mitchell, Jeffery Hester, Jr., Jawuan (Kenya) Mitchell, Micheal Mitchell (recognized as a son by his grandfather), Jasmyne Hester, Jaren Hester, Matthew Mitchell, and Logan Pinckney; great-grandchildren, Arielle Brooks, Kayleigh Roberson, Zane Hester, Noah Mitchell, Jymiah Mitchell, Juelz Hester, Jase Mitchell, and Keenan Mitchell; four brothers, Lawerance Nix, Lonzer (Linda) Nix, Joseph Nix, and Bruce (Kathy) Nix; three sisters, Wilma Houston, Frances Jefferson, and Julia Nix; his “Momma,” Apostle Frances A. Nix; along with a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, family, friends, Thee Deliverance Church family, ILA Local 1414, and the Springfield Central High Class of 1967
