Sherill Macon Young was born to Ralph Vordelle Macon, Sr., and the late Edith Sibert Macon on June 10, 1950, in Savannah, GA. She had two older siblings, the late Sheila Macon Walker and the late Ralph Vordelle Macon, Jr. Sherill grew up in Savannah where she attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from St. Pius X High School in 1968. She then matriculated at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, where she majored in social work. Afterwards, she briefly worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Quantico, Virginia before returning to her home in Savannah, GA.
Sherill was introduced to the late Ronald Winston Young at his law school graduation party by a mutual friend. The impromptu encounter eventually blossomed into holy matrimony on January 25, 1975. The couple moved to Brunswick, GA, where they would remain and become active members of the community. They had one son, Damian Winston Young to whom Sherill was a most loving and devoted mother.
Sherill worked in the Brunswick-Glynn County Public School System for over 30 years, where she served as the principal’s secretary at Jane Macon Middle School and later at Needwood Middle School. In addition to her steadfast administrative support that spanned over several principals, she interacted with thousands of middle school children and their parents, providing them with compassionate help through the school’s main office. Sherill was a devout member of St. Athanasius Episcopal Church in Brunswick for over 40 years. Through her talents, she served in many capacities: church secretary, vestry member, and convention delegate. However, she enjoyed nothing more than being a soprano in the St.
Athanasius choir and was known to spend her days humming her favorite choir hymns. Sherill believed that a church’s ministry extends beyond the walls of the church. She was passionate about participating in the Glynn Episcopal Ministries Literacy Guild where she read books to young children at the Glynn Villa Homes Boys & Girls Club. She was also an Angel Mentor for the Episcopal College Ministry at the College of Coastal Georgia.
Sherill was called home to rest with our Father God on Monday, November 7, 2022. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories: son, Damian W. Young of Houston, TX; granddaughter, Sophia E. Young of Boston, MA; niece, Shanika N. Macon of Cecilia, LA; nephew Edgar V. Walker Jr. of Slidell, LA, and a host of other loving family and friends who will miss her dearly.
