Shirley Green Obituary

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted.” —Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Mrs. Shirley Ann Moree Green was born on July 13, 1953, in Hampton, South Carolina, to the late Mr. Eddie Moree, Sr. and Mrs. Marie Smith Moree. Shirley attended school in Hampton County, where the foundation of her character–her warmth, her faith, and her love for others– was lovingly shaped. At a very early age, Shirley answered the call of faith and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Furman, South Carolina. She attended and served faithfully at Mt. Zion until the Lord called her home. Church was not merely a tradition for Shirley, it was the center of her life. Above all things, what Shirley loved most was going to church and praising the Lord. Shirley dedicated years of honorable service to the South Carolina State Prison in Allendale, South Carolina, where she served with distinction as a Correction Officer. Her commitment and professionalism earned her a promotion to the rank of Corporal, a title she carried with pride until her well-deserved retirement in 2012.

Those who knew Shirley knew she was always thirty minutes early, never just on time. Whether it was a family gathering, a church function, or a neighborhood get-together, Shirley arrived ready and willing, almost always with a covered dish in hand. And what a dish it would be. Shirley was truly famous for her collard greens, her creamy mac and cheese, her potato salad, chicken salad, and her legendary cornbread stuffing. But if you asked anyone who ever had the pleasure of sitting at her table, they would tell you without hesitation: nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to that famous Red Velvet Cake. Shirley also found great joy in sewing, cooking, and dancing, and she brought that same joyful energy to every room she entered. Shirley loved her neighbors, her friends, and her family deeply and without condition. She was always willing to help anyone she could, and she gave of herself generously and without expectation. She was, by every account, a happy and good-spirited woman who loved everyone around her, and she received that love back in abundance. Her beautiful smile and gentle kindness were gifts that touched every life she encountered.

On May 29, 2026, at Hampton Regional Medical Center in Hampton, South Carolina, the Lord gently took the hand of Mrs. Shirley Ann Moree Green and called her home to rest in His presence. She departed this life surrounded by the love she had so freely given throughout her years. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Sr. and Marie Smith Moree, along with three sisters and five brothers.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: her husband of fifty-two years, Winston Green; son, Winston A. Green; two brothers, Sam (Hazel) Moree and Willie (Christina) Moree; one sister-in law, Pearl Green; two special cousins, Rose Johnson and Helen Bush; two best friends, Peggy Williams and Lorraine White; three special friends, Carrie Solomon, Sarah Smith and Mother Alethea Jones; a host of nieces and nephews whom she adored dearly; other relatives and friends; and her Mt. Zion Baptist Church Family.
