Walter Johnson Obituary

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” – Ecclesiastes 12:7

In life, a person must travel many paths. These paths are designed to teach many valuable lessons and to prepare us for our final resting place. I have come to the end of my journey, never to tread through this life here on earth again, and the only thing that I took on this journey was the love I have in my heart for each of you. God promised all mankind three scores and ten. He gave me ten additional years so that mankind could witness God’s grace and mercy for living by his word. Some things in life are impossible for mankind to fully understand. No matter how long God has entrusted our loved ones here on earth, their departure is hard to understand. As a family, you must accept God’s will and abide by his holy words.

What a joy and blessing it was on that cold day on October 10, 1944, in Punta Gorda, FL, when God gave the late Howard and Gracie Wilder Johnson a beautiful bundle of joy whom they named Walter Lee. He received his formal education in the Glynn and Lee County public school systems in Brunswick, GA, and Labelle, FL. Walter was employed by Carter Construction Company as a cement finisher and construction worker for fifteen years. He worked various construction jobs for many years before retiring. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. Later in his life, he was baptized and was united with Holy Temple Church of God in Christ where he served as a deacon.

Walter Lee Johnson was united in holy matrimony with Elsie T. Heck in December of 1971 in Brunswick, GA. Their union was blessed with three children.

On November 28, 2024, God whispered to his child, “Peace be thine.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Gracie Wilder Johnson; brothers, Bishop Willie Thomas, Jr., Howard Johnson, Jr., Marlion Donald Johnson, Sr., and Eddie Paul Johnson; sisters, Tommy Lee Evans, Evette Chambers, Yvonne Boyce; and granddaughters, Kelsha Shackleford and Savannah Petersen.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Elsie Heck Johnson; children, Diane Johnson, Joyce (Keith) Shackelford, both of Jacksonville, FL, Walter Johnson, Jr., of Brunswick, GA, Theresa (Reneau) Londot of New Orleans, LA, Claudette (Ralph) Thompson of Slidell, LA, and Ann (Nicholas) Petersen of Miami, FL; siblings, Dorothy Johnson, Jeanne Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Harry Johnson, all of Labelle, FL, and Francis Tootle of Tavares, FL; sisters-in-law, Pearl Johnson of Labelle, FL, and Mary Grovner and Emma Howard, both of Brunswick, GA; brothers-in-law, Andrew Heck, Jr., James Heck, and Jimme Heck, all of Brunswick, GA, and Johnny Flowers of Swan Quarter, NC; a beloved cousin, Dolores Washington of Brunswick, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
