William Green Obituary

On May 23, 1940, the world was graced with the presence of Mr. William Cornelius Green. Born in Brunswick (Glynn County) Georgia to the late Buford Green, Jr., and Dorothy Green, William was the oldest of their four children. His loving sister Rita L. Myers preceded him in death.

“Po Willie” as he was affectionately known, received his education in the Glynn County School System. An exceptional student with a brilliant mind, William was a part of the Risley High School Crimson Tigers Class of 1958. He was named class valedictorian and gave the commencement speech during the “Class of 1958” graduation ceremony. Because of his love for learning, William attended Howard University and continued his education at Brunswick Junior College, now known as the College of Coastal Georgia and Armstrong Atlantic University, where he received multiple degrees. William also served in the United States Army serving his country during the Vietnam War.

On July 28, 1972, he was joined for over 50 years in Holy Matrimony to Geraldine Elaine Palmer. To this union the couple were blessed with their devoted daughter, Ashleigh.

William possessed a very strong work ethic being employed with Hercules, Incorporated for over 30 plus years, where he worked in the electrical engineering department of the plant.

William was very devoted to his community and involved in its history and preservation. He was a member of numerous community advisory boards including: the Glynn County Tree Advisory Board, Risley High School Class of 1958 Alumni Committee, Selden Park Advisory Board, serving for over 24 years where he was named President Emeritus. He was presented a proclamation by the Glynn County Board of Commissioners recognizing his dedicated service to the park and the citizens of Glynn County. William was an original member of the Goodwill Home Board of Directors for over 30 years, serving consistently until his health began to fail. He was a constant presence at the Roosevelt Harris Senior Center keeping the center in order with his special cousin Elizabeth “Muggie” Wright.

Family was very important to William, and he made sure that relatives knew “kin was kin.” He would tell you who was kin to whom, how they were kin and would stop by checking on relatives to see how they were doing. He was a historian and preserver of land. He loved Needwood and the history of the community. He was a member of St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, a lover of music, an avid reader, and a very talented photographer.

On Monday, October 3, 2022, William completed his assignment here on earth and departed this life leaving to cherish his memory: his wife of over 50 years, Geraldine E.
