Willie Mae Williams Obituary

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Willie Mae Williams, a servant and solider in the Kingdom of the Lord, departed this life on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. She was born in Furman, South Carolina, on January 15, 1936, the eldest of 11 siblings born to Bertha Mae Williams and Clarence Williams, Sr. Willie Mae was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, cousin, and aunt, but her most cherished relationship is the one she shared with her only son, Anthony Williams.

“Did that gal do anything yet?” “I think so,” Mama said. Willie Mae overheard a family friend asking her grandmother when she was still a little girl. They knew that she was on the verge of an encounter with the Lord that would define a life of Christian commitment, unwavering faith, and spiritual maturity. Willie Mae recalled the day, knowing not whether it was in the spirit or in a dream, when she saw herself sinking in what felt like quicksand, when the hand of the Lord reached down and saved her.

After finishing school in Furman, and Savannah, Ga., Willie Mae relocated to New York City in 1953, and lived with her Aunt Rose and Cousin Dot.  Shortly after moving to New York, Willie Mae joined the Southern Baptist Church, under the Pastoral leadership of Rev. C.B. Wilson and then Rev. Benjamin J. Whipper. She was a “Willing” worker at Southern for over 30 years, serving as Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Willing Worker’s Choir, and Director of the Vacation Bible School. Willie Mae was also a very active member and officer in the Baptist Training Union, where she studied and taught Church polity and foundations of Baptist doctrine.  In 1990, Willie Mae joined in fellowship with the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, under the Pastoral leadership of Pastor Richard Watkins and its current Pastor, Reverend Johnny M. Green, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the Mother’s Board.

Willie Mae served society, working as a teacher in the New York Public School system, receiving her Master’s degree in Education (Cum Laude) allowing her to retire with full benefits after 50 years of service.

Willie Mae (lovingly called Aunt Wilamae by many) will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people she has served as spiritual adviser, teacher, and mentor. Her heart’s desire was to always be in the position to tell somebody about Jesus and to encourage those who believe, to know the will of God as revealed in His Word.

Willie Mae had an unwavering commitment to her family. The Smalls /Johnson Family reunion events would be a platform for Willie Mae to remind the family to value our commitment to family, so that we can always have a means by which to fellowship and strengthen our family bonds.
